Finance Networking: Joining Trade Groups
Networking is important in every field, but in the relatively small world of finance, it matters even more. Whether your field is accounting, banking, insurance, or securities, having a broad network can be a game changer in both a job hunt and the advancement of your career.
Networking organizations within finance exist at every level—locally, within states, and nationally. Some groups cater specifically to women and minorities, and even students are welcome. When it comes to investing in your future, trade organizations almost always pay you back for your time and membership fee by moving your career forward.
First, find a group that suits you. A great list of financial groups, including groups that target women and minorities, can be found here. Your company may sponsor your membership, or if you’re a student you may be eligible for a discounted membership fee.
Once you join, it’s important to show up. After all, attending events is the only way to meet new people and increase your connections. Try volunteering when possible to make your presence count even more and add another impressive line to your resume. Showing you invest time in your career is impressive to any firm.
If you can, serve on a discussion panel or board. It likely won’t be a huge time commitment, and it will look fantastic on your resume and make you seem like a heavy hitter. |
