Friending Your Family: Rethinking Your Finance Network

Sometimes we think of social media as a job hunting tool so often that we forget what social media was designed to be—a tool to help us keep up with friends and family. When looking for a finance position, many people focus too hard on their professional contacts and neglect their family and friends, a huge portion of their potential network.

As you leverage your network to land your next job, don’t just consider contacts within the finance world. Everyone you know, from fishing buddies to neighbors to cousins, can be part of your network. Don’t limit your search options by deciding that only a handful of people can help.

When expanding your network, don’t be shy about the fact that you’re searching for a job. Be open about your circumstances; most people will understand and want to help. It’s okay to be honest about where you are and what you’re looking for.

Friends and family can be some of your best job searching resources because they know you better than anyone. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to have a “pitch” that quickly explains what kind of job you want in a casual way. Steer clear of industry jargon so that any friend could easily understand what kind of job you want. If they understand what you do, they’ll be better able to help you make the right connections.

Being honest with your social network should end with anything that isn’t professional. Don’t be negative about your search, your employer, or a former employer. Portray everything in a positive light. After all, asking friends to extend their network to you is a big favor, and it involves a great deal of trust. Prove that you’re worth their investment.

As friends and family give you a hand in your search, be sure to return the favor. Find out what you can do to help the people who have helped you, whether that involves passing along sales leads or job contacts. Give and take is not only the best way to operate; it’s also the best way to keep the friendships intact.
