A Raw Deal: How to Cope With a Low Bonus
The economy may be down, but that doesn’t necessarily lessen the sting of an unexpectedly disappointing bonus. Many finance workers used to enjoy big bucks in their bonus checks, but those days have drawn to a rapid close with the changing economy. While your first impulse may be to balk, pout, or sob, it’s important to maintain a little perspective. After all, you’re not only employed, but you also still got a bonus check.
In any industry, attitude is everything. But in finance, attitude matters even more. It can affect your reputation dramatically, and within a relatively small world, it’s important to be seen as a positive force instead of a complaining one. Whining may be gratifying now, but it will put a target on your back in the long run. Take a step back and let things settle before you consider doing anything about your bonus.
If you cool off and are still determined to have a conversation with your boss, plan carefully and be strategic. Don’t go into the meeting with a mindset that you’re entitled to anything, and don’t complain. In fact, don’t make it about you at all. Put your questions and concerns within the context of how you can help the company as a whole. This will earn you points instead of exhausting your boss.
If you’re convinced that your bonus fell short, be prepared with hard facts about why. Sites such as Salary.com and PayScale.com can give you a good idea of what people in similar positions are earning, but that isn’t enough to convince a boss who is stressed, under pressure, and dealing with complicated budgets. While it’s best not to go through an interview process just to leverage another job offer, it is okay to say that recruiters have been contacting you and making your decision to stay more difficult.
Should your bonus check fail to deliver, don’t consider it an excuse to be lazy. Instead, use this as a chance to take on more responsibility and show your dedication to your career and your company. Again, it all comes back to attitude, and your boss will thank you now and in the long run for your energy, enthusiasm, and commitment.
While a small bonus check may feel like a big blow, it’s important to keep everything in perspective. When you love your job, it’s worth sticking it out, working harder, and seeing what you can achieve in the coming year. |
