Interview Tips - Questions Accounting Job Seekers Should Ask

Many businesses today post detailed information about their company culture, ethics, clients and business processes online. So when it comes time for the dreaded question of, “Do you have any questions,” is there anything left to ask? Absolutely. Just because you have done your homework doesn’t mean questions can’t help you show an employer what you really have to offer.

Show off your technical knowledge base.

A great way to illustrate your knowledge of current accounting rules and regulations is to ask how a business has responded specifically to more recent regulatory changes. Prove you’re savvy by asking how specific regulations have affected a firm and its clients. You could also ask how regulations have molded a company’s future projections and strategies.

Highlight an accomplishment while asking a question.

It’s important to understand what a company’s expectations of you will be. However, instead of just asking what those expectations are, use the opportunity to showcase your abilities. For example, if you’re a record setter for preparing, evaluating and negotiating proposals, illustrate your accomplishment and then ask if that would be in line with the company’s expectations.

Find the company’s priorities and make them your own.

In finance, the client is paramount, so showing your interest in providing the right kind of service to a client will set you above the rest. Ask what kinds of clients you would be working with and what kinds of industries you would be involved in covering. Asking specific questions about clients is a great opportunity to showcase some of the research you have done on the company before the interview.

Use a question to reveal your career goals.

Questions about how people are promoted to certain positions are a great way to prove that you’re engaged and have a set of goals for yourself. These also show that you’ll be a ready contributor and dedicated worker. Illustrating your focus on your career path shows your motivation to move forward.

Don’t leave them hanging.

One question you should always ask is, “What are the next steps?” While you don’t want to appear overeager, you do want to show that you are interested in the position and want to know what will be next in the interview process. Asking shows that you care.

As a final question, consider asking whether you could meet other people in the company who you would be working with, specifically those who would be in leadership over your department. This shows your enthusiasm for the job and lets you get an additional perspective on the company’s culture.
